El día sábado, Manchester United, rival clásico del City, había alcanzado transitoriamente el primer puesto al vencer al difícil Liverpool por 2-1 con goles de Wayne Rooney. El descuento para el Liverpool lo hizo el uruguayo Luis Suárez.
